snewberry writes: Vision Statement

Technology integration is a process that must be undertaken by the community and can be facilitated by the school. To prepare academically and civically successful students, curriculum must be taught in the context of society's innovations in order for it to be meaningful to past, present, and future generations. Therefore, technology must become a vital part of instruction because it is the only medium with the capacity to instantaneously join these eras together and make them meaningful to all.

My Eductaional Technology Message:

My message centers on student engagement and teacher relevance. It simply makes sense. If students are engaged, by definition, they devote time and energy to the task. The complaints of our students revolve around incompetence of teachers when discussing technology use. The Pew Internet in American Life research clearly indicates that although most students respect their teachers, most find those same teachers woefully lacking in technology skills. Although my own research is far from definitive, there is a suggestion that teacher relevance could be waning with students. What disturbs me about that is the fact that developing minds need expert guidance. If students start turning to the first hit in Google for their answers, I believe our world is in trouble.

PASS is our curriculum. Since we measure PASS, PASS is what gets done. Right or wrong, I work to accomplish the PASS goals and incorporate information skills. Technology is the perfect vehicle for that. The brain science has taught the emotional relevance is the key factor for any information to actually get to the brain. Boredom is a learning killer as surely as an out-of-control classroom is on the other end of the spectrum. Technology can help classroom teachers elicit a level of engagement that makes it possible for students to attend to the information being presented.

One great example of integration is the Intel Teach to the Future initiative. The pedagogical approaches and the product driven nature of the program make it a perfect match for any teacher attempting to integrate technology and still teach to the standards. The teachers leave with a standards based unit of instruction that uses technology to engage the student with not only the skill addressed, but the over-arching concepts the Intel curriculum calls “The essential question.”

The final piece of the puzzle in my mind is a Learning Management System (LMS). This technology piece marries the curriculum to the technology. Anything less is destined to become add-on or tertiary to the teachers.

An LMS allows an organization to manage the learning as the name implies.

Learning Management Systems allow the district to:

• Set expectations

• Build in differentiation

• Build in best practices

o instructional

o remedial

o enrichment

• Link the standards to unit plans with resources and activities

• Link to student assessment resources like Edusoft.

• Provide student feedback

• Maintain teacher and student portfolios
Successful implementation of any plan requires . . . a plan.
I agree with your vision statement, but how do we tell veteran teachers that their technology skills are "woefully lacking?" The key to this plan's success is "selling" it to the district. So many teachers are discontented with the current innovations such as Edusoft and Integrade Pro because they see these things as additional burdens rather than time savers. I agree that teachers may be less relevant to their students but remember there is a disconnect between generations in most instances (student v. teacher). Students have been raised on video games and the Internet, so it is natural to assume they will go to Google for answers. Rather than fear that, I think we should encourage that. Didn't we decide as a class last semester that inquiry-based learning is the key to engaging students and promoting independent, life-long learners? Wouldn't incorrect information make for good classroom discussion, and veteran teachers are expert in their fields. Wouldn't they enjoy proving someone else wrong! (I would!) The bottom line is, we have to tap into the potential that both students and teachers have and incorporate that into our plan, the curriculum, and the district. I like the Intel to Teach program, but we have to stop looking for "the next best thing in education" and work with the materials we have. We have computer labs, we have Internet access, we have qwizdom, smart boards, etc. etc. Let's help teachers where they are. We need to break down the barriers of fear that prevent many teachers from using the equipment they have and tell them it's ok to let kids show them how to do it. In many cases, they know more than we do. As far as the LMS is concerned, it has to be another added piece of the puzzle, but again, they way it has been added is another time constraint placed on teachers. Until we are given adequate time to feel comfortable with all this "stuff," our students will continue to wonder how we ever got degrees without it. So what is the answer? Matching the best piece of technology to help meet the PASS objective in any given situation. The district needs to create a space such as this one to post integrated lesson plans, questions, and advice. We need to know there are more of us out there struggling with the same problems. We need to build a digital community composed of students, teachers, and parents.
